10/9/2013 · 2. V – Drive Transmission The V – drive transmission systems of yesteryear possessed a bad reputation for their racket and gear noise. However, today’s V – drive transmissions from companies such as Twin Disc, Velvet Drive and ZF (all of which bolt directly to the back of the engine, which faces backwards in these systems) offer smoother and quieter operation.
A V – drive and a direct drive are both inboard propulsion systems, which means the engine drives a propshaft that passes through the boat bottom, with the propeller positioned under the boat and steering accomplished by a rudder. Let’s take a closer look at some of the differences between a v – drive vs. a direct drive engine.

7/31/2018 · Lets do a comparison using a 15 year old 32ft boat as an example. One boat is a shaft or V – drive , and the other is a twin sterndrive. Both boats have 500 hours, and for arguments-sake need some maintenance. From our experience, we will consider the differences in maintenance considerations at 10-15 years for both shaft- drive and sterndrive.

Of course they sell stern drives , so read it with an eye towards that. However, they did offer a direct drive competition ski boat for a while too. Lets see — Cobat — check, got into the market then out, 1) Engine coupled to the transmission towards bow of boat closed coupled in-line drive , down angle, drop parallel, or co-axial. 2) Engine coupled to the tranny towards rear of boat (Closed Coupled V – Drive ) engine weight, not transmission weight, shifted aft approx 3-4 ft in smaller engine installs compared to the same boat with an in-line.
